Administering Drugs by Injection

Two routine injections that have to be given by owners involve the treatment of diabetes using insulin and allergenic extract injections to control skin allergies. Your veterinarian will review the technique but the following questions and answers may be of help.

Administering Subcutaneous Fluids

Subcutaneous fluids are recommended by doctors to treat various diseases.  Sometimes it is necessary to give fluids for a short period of time, other times these fluids will have be administered for the duration of the pet's life

Airline Travel with your cat

Cats fly every day. Although some unfortunate events occasionally occur, these can be avoided if some simple steps are taken. It is impossible to overemphasize the need to consult with the airline well in advance of your trip. This is essential if you hope to avoid last minute problems. Here are some basic tips for airline travel with your cat.

Allergies in Cats

What are allergies and how do they affect cats?

One of the most common conditions affecting cats is allergy. An allergy occurs when the cat's immune system "overreacts" to foreign substances called allergens or antigens.

Anal Sac Disease in Cats

The anal sacs are located on either side of the anus just under the skin at the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions. They connect to the anus by means of small canals called ducts. Anal sacs produce and store a dark, foul-smelling fluid. These are the same types of organs that a skunk has to scare away its enemies and mark territory. Although cats use their anal sacs for the same purpose, most domestic cats have no need to mark territory or repel predators. Because the sacs are rarely emptied, the fluid builds up, solidifies, and becomes an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive.

Anemia in Cats

What does it mean to be anemic?

Anemia is a reduced number of red blood cells or hemoglobin or both. It is not a specific disease but the result of some disease process.

Anthrax

I’ve heard about anthrax in people. Should I be concerned for my dog?

Unfortunately anthrax is being used as a method of bio-terrorism and dogs can be infected, as can most mammals. Birds are normally resistant to the disease. Different animals have different levels of susceptibility to anthrax infection. Herbivores (cattle, sheep, horses) are the most susceptible and humans; dogs are less susceptible to infection. Under normal circumstances cases of anthrax in dogs are very rare.

Asthma and Bronchitis in Cats

Obstructive and allergic lung diseases affect many cats and are sometimes called “asthma,” “bronchitis,” or “bronchial asthma.” Unfortunately, these diseases are not easily classified and probably represent a variety of lung disorders. They do share a common finding of “hyper-responsive” or “over-reactive” airways.

Behavior: Causes and Diagnosis of Problems

What makes a pet misbehave?

Behavior problems can be due to medical or behavioral causes, or both. A clinical history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing will determine if there are underlying medical conditions contributing to the problem.

Behavioral Management Products

What products are available to help prevent undesirable behavior?

There are numerous products on the market that have been designed to help prevent undesirable behavior in pets. Leashes, harnesses, and head halters are needed to keep pets under control, especially when outdoors. A cage or X-pen provides a safe comfortable home for the dog, when the owners are not available to supervise. Alternately, child locks and child barricades can be used to keep pets away from potential problem areas.
